Sutra 2.4 : The Fertile Ground

Avidya, nescience, the first klesha, is the field of operation of the other four.

Chapter 2: Sadhana pada.

अविद्या क्षेत्रमुत्तरेषाम् प्रसुप्ततनुविच्छिन्नोदाराणाम् ॥४॥

avidyā kśetram-uttareṣāṃ prasupta-tanu-vicchinna-udārāṇām ||4||

"Nescience is the field for the others, whether dormant, tenuous, alternated or fully operative."

The purpose of this sutra is to explain that the first klesha, avidya, nescience, is the ground or field of operation for the other four afflictions.
