Sutra 2.5 : Knowing the unreal is not knowing

Avidya is not simply ignorance, it's misperception and a lack of awareness

अनित्याशुचिदुःखानात्मसु नित्यशुचिसुखात्मख्यातिरविद्या ॥५॥

anitya-aśuci-duḥkha-anātmasu nitya-śuci-sukha-ātma-khyātiḥ avidyā ||5||

Nescience is the taking of the non-eternal, the impure, the painful and the not self to be the eternal, the pure, the pleasurable and the self.

The purpose of this sutra is to explain the meaning of avidya, which is this unreal cognition of the impure in the pure that is constantly seen.
